Dimples, I presume

Well it's certainly no Skye Tweed Aran Cardigan, but Dimples is done! I even have some (pretty poor) photos of it. (What do you want? It's exam season, my brain is chained to my Latin textbook currently)

Name: Dimples (thanks Ellen!)
Pattern: Elizabth Zimmermann's percentage-based seamless saddle-shouldered sweater (I took it from The Opinionated Knitter)
Yarn: Mandarin Soft Cotton, about 17 balls
Needles: Aero 5mm, 80cm circulars (and some of my random assorted metal 5mm DPNs for the sleeves)
Knitting Time: Februrary 10th (give or take, there was some ripping a few days after to restart smaller), until April 10th (sewing on the last button). Not bad for a sweater in my size, I don't think. I watched A Lot of Battlestar Galactica and Heroes. I was tempted to name it something BSG related, but I really like Dimples.

What do I think? It's soft as all get out, mrowr, it fits (I am a shade leery of the stress that I think is on the back corner of the underarms, but I have no idea what I could even do to remedy that), I like the colours, I think it's fairly flattering, the shoulders worked out pretty well (I was sort of winging the colourwork at that point). I am however absolutely freaking paranoid of wearing/caring for it. I am afraid that it is going to wear out spontaneously or combust or fall apart when it has to get washed, Help!

I did some math, and there are nearly 30,000 stitches in the body below the arms alone (might figure out all the rest once I have some time for fun). But i'll toss up those photos, because I don't want to sit here and type (or study), I'm going biking, woo! (I will try to get good photos of it on me at some point, but it's kind of unlikely without an aide to assist me)

  7. Hey, that looks fantastic!! I'm so impressed. Go ahead and wear it. You know what they say about handmade socks lasting longer than store bought ones, so I'm sure it will be fine.

I've started my first sweater, I'm sure when it's done, I'll be nervous about wearing it too (I'm assuming it'll be a smashing success). Might as well enjoy it though.

  11. Michael, the sweater looks so awesome! I really love the buttons and the collar, it's such a cool look. You did a fantastic job, and are inspiring me to knit my first sweater. I think EZ's instructions are the way to go, they make for such a nice finished product. Kudos again, I love it!

  12. You know, I have knitted several cardigans and vests over the years, thoroughly enjoyed myself knitting them, sad thing is I consider them all TOO NICE for me to wear. Maybe waiting for that special occasion that will never come.

  15. Someone once told me: "I'm not leaving anything for the second wife; I'm using all the good china now."

What's the point of spending all that time and money on good yarn, knitting a fantastic sweater for yourself... and then not wearing it? I think I missed something there.

It does look good, better with you in it. Wear it. Be proud!

  16. What an excellent sweater! I am considering taking apart a sweater that I made last year because the wool didn't really suit the pattern. Yours appear to be well matched! Kudos to the The Boy! I love the raised collar in the back.

    - and it's not just because I liked the dimples!

  17. Golly, looks great!
I know what you mean about the fear of wearing what you have made, when it is something so... extensive. When I was on my sewing kick, I'd make piece after piece of clothing, only to find myself terrified to wear anything I'd worked so hard on. Eventually, I got annoyed at myself and just got into it.
    Peace,
    Christine
p.s. If this came through 5 zillion times, sorry.

  18. Wahoooo!!! Love the sweater :)

As for your concern over the stress on the arm hole? ... well it can be "remedied" so to speak by sewing s bit of grossgrain ribbon or twill tape in an appropriate color by hand on the inside where you want reinforcement. any sweaters I have done I have also added some twill tape(feels nicer to the skin to me) around the neck edge of collars as well. Hope it helps out.
